"De Muur" or "The Wall"
The
cartoon entitled, “De Muur”, simply means
“The Wall.” One can infer from the date; November of 1989, and place of
geographic coverage; Berlin (Germany), that the artist is indirectly referring to
the Berlin Wall. On November 9, 1989, the borders between East and West Berlin
were opened for the first time in almost 30 years. In my opinion, this cartoon,
which was published only 5 days after the end of the Berlin Wall, is meant to
shine light on the fact that the leaders and all who opposed the tearing down
of the wall, simply watched and could not do anything about it.
